Hawks battle through four, lose to Sigourney

SULLY — Looking at a straight-set loss to visiting Sigourney, Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks battled back in front of a home crowd Thursday.

“We weren’t ready to go home yet,” said Heather James, Hawk head coach.

The Hawks got out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and kept the Savages at bay to win 25-18. A six-point run at the service line by junior Shelby Davis pushed Lynnville-Sully from a 13-12 lead to an 18-12 advantage.

Davis had a kill and a tip at the net with junior Madison Rasmusson serving to record the set victory. Down 2-1, the Hawks wouldn’t go quietly in the fourth set, which was nip-and-tuck the entire way.

A kill by Sigourney’s Jordan Carter led to a three-point serving run by her teammate Sierra Davis to end the match. Sigourney notched a South Iowa Cedar League win over Lynnville-Sully, 25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-18.

“They have one really good player in Jordan Carter. She’s a tough player. She kept hitting on that right side to the back row, and normally, we don’t defend that. That’s a place you kind of give up because most teams don’t hit there. You cover the rest of the floor. They hit there a lot tonight, and we just couldn’t defend it,” James said.

The Hawks and Savages had several long rallies on the floor during the match. Most came in the final two sets with the Hawks winning several. In the fourth set, it was tied 17-18, when Sigourney had a four-point swing to take the lead.

A kill by Lynnville-Sully senior Cassie Cullen, who had a team-leading 11 kills on the night, halted the Sigourney run. Unfortunately, the Hawks couldn’t respond from the serving line.

“We did a lot of good things tonight. I was happy with the way our girls came back and got a win in the third set. It was disappointing to lose, but the girls battled and took it to four sets,” James said.

Cullen put up a solo block and had three assisted blocks at the net for the Hawks. Rasmusson had three assisted blocks.

Davis delivered 10 kills followed by Rasmusson with three kills, and senior Macy Lanser and junior Lysandra James with two kills apiece. Seniors Jade Van Rees and Lyndsay Terpstra had one kill each.

Van Rees was credited with 25 set assists. Lanser and Cullen came up with 19 digs each. Terpstra, as libero, and Van Rees each had 10 digs. Davis recorded 15 digs.

Davis served for 11 points, plus had three ace serves. Lanser had six service points and two aces. Cullen, James and senior Kristal Beyer each had a service ace.

The Hawks are 1-5.

Sigourney won the junior varsity match 25-17, 25-23. Lynnville-Sully took the freshman/sophomore match 21-15, 21-18.
