Feds charge Brock with production of child porn

Newton man was arrested in July for sexual exploitation

James Wiley Brock, a 72-year-old Newton man charged in July with a number of state sex crimes now faces federal charges.

The Newton Police Department issued a press release Monday stating Brock was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 3, by federal agents and charged with sexual exploitation of a minor/production of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He was given a court date and released to await trial.

If convicted, Brock faces 15 to 30 years in federal prison on each count. The federal system has no early-release provisions.

Officers conducted a search of Brock’s home in the 800 block of East 14th Street South on July 2 based on a complaint filed by the parents of a minor. He was then arrested on two counts of sexual exploitation of children and two counts of invasion of privacy.

Expanded media coverage was requested by several Des Moines television stations and granted in late July. A hearing was scheduled in the state matter for Oct. 7 to hear arguments on a defense motion to suppress some of the evidence in the case.

No new filings have been made in the state matter since Brock’s arrest on the federal charges last week.
