Cardinal freshmen win

NEWTON — Newton Senior High’s freshmen rolled to a 17-0 halftime lead last Friday night at home against Knoxville. The Cardinal freshmen posted a 23-0 victory.

“These boys put together a dominating performance tonight to earn their first victory as Newton Cardinals.  The same group of Knoxville boys had beaten them in 7th and 8th grade. The confidence of this group of boys is growing and we are excited for the opportunities that are ahead of us,” said Trent Powers, NHS assistant coach.

Justice Borger rushed for 78 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Reese Rosenquist carried the ball 10 times for 56 yards. Reagan Maple, the Cards’ quarterback, rushed for a touchdown. Josh Gulling kicked a 23-yard field goal.

On defense, the Cardinals forced two fumbles and blocked a punt. Nathan Lanferman forced a fumble that Gulling recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Keith Steinbach recovered a fumble forced by Petyon Patterson. Trenton Brady blocked the punt.
