Two Newton properties up for auction
Two Newton staple properties will be up for auction in September and October.
The August Bergman Inn, located at 629 First Ave. E., will be up for auction at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22. The house, which is a Mission Spanish Revival home, was built in 1909 for August Bergman, the brother-in-law of F.L. Maytag. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house has quarter sawn oak woodwork, leaded stained glass windows and two fireplaces. The house has 3322 square feet, while the lot is 80-by-246 square feet. The property taxes annually are $4,196, and the property is valued at $209,640.
Antique furniture currently in the house also will be auctioned at noon on the same day. This includes dining, living and bedroom furniture. Several rugs will be sold as well as an outdoor fountain. Several industrial grade kitchen appliances will be sold as well.
The home was used as an inn for several years. The current owners, WeeGerk Inc., purchased the house for $440,000. The owners previously sued the operator of the inn in 2011 for not disclosing at the time of the purchase the condition of the house. An attempt for a new trial failed.
The Cardinal Hills Golf and Swim Club also will be auctioned at 10 a.m. Oct. 19. The golf course is 72 acres and consists of nine holes, which was once voted the best nine-hole golf course in the state of Iowa by the Iowa Golf Association.
The clubhouse, which is 12,425 square feet and has a commercial kitchen, also will be auctioned. A 2100-square-foot swimming pool is also on the property, along with two metal equipment buildings. The annual property taxes are $21,262, and the property is assessed at $541,300.
Mark Davis, the current owner of Cardinal Hills, recently closed the course after the Newton City Council denied his proposal to sell plots of land for housing developments. Selling the plots as the RJ Ranch Minor Subdivision was a plan Davis had for the land since he bought it almost a year ago.
