James Lyle

James Lyle, 91, lifelong Laurel resident, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at the Villa del Sol while in their loving care and that of the Iowa River Hospice. He had formerly been residing at Bickford Cottages in Marshalltown.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Laurel United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with military honors in the Maple Grove Cemetery northwest of Laurel (in the 1930s, Maple Grove became known as the Methodist Cemetery at Laurel to avoid confusion with Melbourne’s Maple Grove). Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with a Masonic Rite being presented at 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Laurel United Methodist Church, Laurel American Legion or Iowa River Hospice. Born Hugh James Lyle on April 22, 1922, in Laurel, he was the son of Irish immigrants James and Rachel (Bates) Lyle. He graduated from the Laurel High School in 1940. In January of 1942, he was united in marriage to Arlene Lois Paul. They were married for 52 years at the time of her passing in 1994. To this union, three children were born: Ronna, Calvin and Stanley. Jim and Arlene started farming until it was interrupted by his services in the U.S. Navy in WWII. Upon his return, they continued farming south of Laurel. In 1963, they bought land northwest of Laurel and moved there in 1967. Jim farmed until his retirement. After graduating from Iowa State, his son Calvin joined Jim in the farming operation. Jim was a member of the Laurel United Methodist Church, the Laurel American Legion Post No. 635 and the Masonic Lodge.

Jim is survived by his three children: daughter Ronna (Larry) Venn of Omaha, Neb., Calvin Arlan (Rosemary) Lyle of Laurel, and Stanley Paul (Marnell) Lyle of Cedar Falls. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Matthew (Katrina) Venn of Omaha, Neb., Andrew (Marcie) Venn of Victoria, Minn., Kurt (Melissa) Lyle of Laurel, Patrick (Amie) Lyle of Storm Lake, John Lyle of Bondurant, Rachel (Aaron) Hatch of Redding, Calif., and James Lyle of Richfield, Minn.; 13 great-grandchildren, triplets Zachary, Joshua and Alexander Venn, Mason and Jack Venn, Carter, Harrison and Seraphina Lyle, Johnathan, Madeline and Brayden Lyle and Zachary and Erica Lyle. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lyle and Alice Lyle; brother-in-law Donald A. Paul; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jim was preceded by his parents; his wife Arlene; and brothers, David L. Lyle and William J. Lyle.
