NORWALK — Newton Senior High’s freshman football team opened its season a few days later than scheduled. The freshmen usually play prior to the varsity game on Friday night, but the excessive heat last week pushed the game at Norwalk to Monday night.
Reese Rosenquist broke off a 53-yard touchdown run for Newton in the second quarter Monday. Josh Gulling kicked the extra point to make it 20-7. Gulling’s 30-yard field gola in the fourth period accounted for all of the Cardinal scoring.
Norwalk beat Newton 33-10.
The Cardinal freshmen (0-1) play at home Friday against Knoxville. Their game starts at 4:45 p.m. at H.A. Lynn Stadium with the varsity contest to follow.
“As a coaching staff, we are very proud of the effort the boys gave to continue to play hard through out the entire game no matter what the score was,” said Trent Powers, NHS assistant coach.
“Scoring in every game is a team goal of ours, and to score against a team which had shut these boys out in seventh and eighth grade is something we can build on for the rest of the season.”
