Shaw Media purchases Prairie City News
Shaw Media, owner of the Newton Daily News, has purchased the Prairie City News from Peter and Criste Scarnati, both parties announced today. The sale will be effective Friday.
The Scarnatis have been the owners, publishers and editors of the Prairie City News since 2005. The newspaper has won numerous awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association under their leadership, including the Harrison “Skip” Weber Investigative Reporting Award in each of the past two years.
Daily News publisher Dan Goetz also will serve as publisher of the Prairie City News.
“This is a great opportunity for our company,” Goetz said. “Peter and Criste have served their community well by publishing an award-winning paper for many years, and we look forward to continuing that tradition.”
Tom Shaw, CEO of Shaw Media, based in Dixon, Ill., said, “Shaw Media is pleased to bring The Prairie City News into its growing family of dedicated, community-based, information companies. We absolutely look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the community of Prairie City, which we will be serving.”
“We had been negotiating the terms of the agreement for several months,” Criste Scarnati said. “We’re very pleased to leave the oldest existing business in Prairie City in the capable and highly experienced hands of NPC.”
In existence since 1875, the Prairie City News is the oldest continually operating business in Prairie City.
“We are honored to have preserved and enhanced the excellent tradition of the Prairie City News for the past eight years,” noted Peter Scarnati. “It hasn’t been without its challenges, but I wouldn’t trade the experience of serving this community for anything.”
Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated family newspaper company in the nation. In addition to the Daily News and Jasper County Tribune, it operates newspaper properties in suburban Chicago, northern Illinois and southwestern Iowa.
The Scarnatis are confident a tradition of excellence and continuity will remain as Shaw Media takes over.
“We wish Dan Goetz and his staff all the best going forward,” Peter Scarnati said. “We’re very confident they will continue to provide readers and advertisers the very best in service as they have proven over the years. We’re also very pleased they have agreed to maintain the office in its current location adjacent to the post office for the foreseeable future.”
