The Newton Daily News reported: On Aug. 19, 1938, at 10:00 a.m., Marshall Law was lifted by Governor Nelson G. Kraschel in the City of Newton. Civil authorities were reinstated with their full constitutional and statutory authority as the three-month old labor dispute at the Maytag Company was nearing resolution. Three local women, Isabel Fisher, Hope Valentine, and Winifred Martin, and one man, W. B. Shaw, directed the successful 1938 Monroe Old Settlers Reunion. In the comic strip section, Dinny, Alley Oop’s dinosaur sidekick, passed away after consuming one of the Wizer’s potions. The deceased reptile was replaced by a young dinosaur being raised by Foozie in his family’s cave. Roswell’s soda fountain was selling banana splits for 20 cents and the Reliable Department Store was selling ten lbs of sugar in a cloth sack for 49 cents.
