INDIANOLA — Newton’s Cardinal golf team opened the 2013 season with a solid performance Monday at the Indianola High Invitational. The Cardinals finished fifth with a four-player score of 326.

“I was really Impressed with our kids’ efforts today,” said Pat Riley, Cardinal head golf coach. “I did not expect to shoot this low on our first meet out. I know our kids felt they could have or should have shot better.”

Junior Devin Shores collected an individual medal with his 77 for the 18-hole tournament at the Indianola Country Club. Sophomore Derek Damman shot an 81 and senior Bobb Dowling carded an 82.

Playing in his first varsity golf tournament, freshman Austin Reynolds provided the final score for the team. Reynolds finished with an 86.

Senior Cory Hartgers was just four shots behind Reynolds with a 90. Tyler Thongvonh, a junior, shot a 94.

Ankeny Centennial won the team title with a 294 followed by Southeast Polk with a 301. Des Moines Roosevelt earned the third-place shot with a 305, just ahead of Ottumwa at 306.

“We will continue to get better as we clean up the short game mishaps such as three putts, not getting up and down from the fringe,” Riley said. “So, I am excited to see where this team can go.”

The Cardinals travel to Mason City next Monday.
