Local resident winners at Iowa State Fair

• Regina Sarmento of Newton won second place in the Coach’s Favorite Chili Contest.

• Jeffrey King of Newton won first place in the Mine is the Best BBQ Sauce competition and first place in the Cooking with Winter Squash contest.

• Phyllis Olson of Newton won second place for deviled eggs in the Egg-Ceptional Eggs Cooking contest; honorable mention for gingerbread desserts and second place for quick breads — corn bread in the Make It with Lard competition and second place in The Best Dipping Sauce Ever competition.

• Bruce Wehrle of Lynnville won second place in the Blue Ribbon Baked Beans competition.

• Allie Turnbull of Mingo won second place for 7-year-old girls at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Mariyah Roush of Baxter won first place for 8-year-old girls at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Katie Schlosser of Colfax tied for fifth place for 9-year-old girls at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Korie Jack of Kellogg won first place for 11-year-old girls at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Ashlie Leon of Baxter won third place for 11-year-old girls at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Kenny Schlosser of Colfax won first place for 9-year-old boys at the Pedal Power Pull.

• Randy Clark of Monroe won second place in Class B of the open singles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Emily Miller of Newton won third place in the western pleasure — riders 14 and under division of the Open Western Horse Show.

• Dakotah Osborn of Newton won fifth place for junior heifer calf — March 1 to May 31, 2013 and 11th place for senior heifer calf – Sept. 1 to Nov. 30, 2012 in the Ayrshire Dairy Cattle show.

• Demi Osborn of Newton won 13th place for junior heifer calf — March 1 to May 31, 2013 and sixth place for junior 2-year-old cow – March 1 to Aug. 31, 2011 in the Ayrshire Dairy Cattle show.

• Iow-Shire of Newton won fifth place for junior yearling heifer – March 1 to May 31, 2012.
