Third Annual Track Walk to be held Saturday

Much like the city that it is situated in, Iowa Speedway has stared at adversity and taken it head on. In 2011, the NASCAR Foundation pulled their Track Walk and in response the Iowa Speedway Foundation started its own.

Saturday will mark the Third Annual Iowa Speedway Foundation Track Walk. For a $25 donation, participants will be allowed to walk the 0.875-mile tri-oval.

“The proceeds go to the Iowa Speedway Foundation.  From there, the ISF committee decides who to award funds to,” ISF Director Debb Smith said.

In the last year, the ISF has donated or raised funds for the Newton Community School District, the Newton YMCA, the scholarship fund for Miss Iowa Speedway, NACAR Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski’s Checkered Flag Foundation and other local organizations.

“I just tallied up the amount of monies that were distributed from the ISF from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 and it was more than $87,000,” Smith said.

Another reason to sign up for the walk is the opportunity to meet your favorite driver.

“It’s always fun to see which drivers come out and walk the track with the fans.  I think they really enjoy it as much as the fans do,” Smith said.

The event will go on no matter the weather, unless conditions become too extreme.
