Six area athletes make All-District baseball teams

Following the conclusion of the 2013 baseball season, some of the more outstanding players were rewarded with recognition on the IHSBCA All-District teams. These players were some of the more standout contributors to their teams, whether it be on the mound, at the plate or in the field.

The lone Newton Cardinal finding his way on an All-District team was senior catcher Taylor Field, who was recognized for his play by being awarded a spot on the second team in Iowa’s South Central District.

Field led the Cardinals in hits with 38, home runs (3), doubles (12), triples (2), RBI (21) and stolen bases (11). Throughout the season, Field received praise from both his teammates and his coaches. Co-coaches Darin Tisdale and Pat Riley frequently referenced Field as being one of the most talented players either them had ever coached.

Colfax-Mingo

The Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks had a streaky 2013 season. Despite the team’s inconsistent play at times, it always received outstanding performances from several of its seniors. Two of those seniors found their way to the Class 2A Central District First Team — Connor Hainer and Jake Alexander.

Hainer played outfield and led off for the Tigerhawks on a regular basis. He was a thief on the basepaths, leading all of Class 2A with 45 stolen bases. Hainer’s 56 hits placed him third in the class and led the Tigerhawks. He was also third in Class 2A with 47 runs scored.

The other first teamer for the Tigerhawks was third baseman and pitcher Jake Alexander. Alexander led the Tigerhawks with seven home runs and 39 RBI. His .825 slugging percentage was first on the team by a wide margin. Alexander also excelled on the mound, placing in the top-10 in the class with 76 innings pitched. He had an ERA of 2.21 to go along with six wins and 73 strikeouts.

Finding his way to the second team was outfielder Chad McLain. McLain was only able to play in 20 of the Tigerhawks’ 34 games due to an injury, and he may have landed on the first team had he stayed healthy. McLain led the team with a .522 batting average. He also had 11 doubles and 27 RBI.

PCM

Prairie-City Monroe was the final area school represented on the All-District teams list. Both shortstop Ethan Kain and utility player Alex DeWitte made the Class 2A Central District Second Team.

Kain hit .383 with a .589 slugging percentage this season. He led the Mustangs with 35 RBI, more than double that of second on the team. Kain also led the team in doubles (8), home runs (2), triples (4) and stolen bases (20). Kain’s 41 hits were second on the team to freshman center fielder Clay Cooper.

DeWitte dominated on the mound and at the plate for PCM. He tied Kain for the team lead in homers to go along with 15 RBI, four doubles and a .357 batting average. DeWitte led the team in wins with four, innings pitched (37 1/3) and strikeouts (49).
