Marjorie B. Altemeier

Marjorie B. Altemeier, 99, of Newton died Saturday afternoon, July 20, 2013, under the care of Skiff Hospice at Newton Health Care Facility.

A time of remembrances for Marjorie will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, conducted by Rev. Jessica Petersen-Orwenyo and Rev. David Raymond. A time of fellowship and visitation will follow the memorial service at the church. A private family burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials have been designated in Marjorie’s name to the Congregational United Church of Christ or to Skiff Hospice. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Marjorie, the daughter of Harry and Beryl (Hayter) Bergman, was born June 22, 1914, near Newton. She was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1932. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she had lived in Texas from 1948 to 1956.

On June 13, 1936, Marjorie was united in marriage with Dale A. Altemeier in Grant City, Mo. Over the years, she was employed by the Vernon Company and Fashionette, retiring from the Jasper County Auditor’s Office as a clerk.

Marjorie devoted her life to her family and friends, and was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, CWC Club, Tool Chapel Questers, AO-P.E.O., Newton Women’s Club and their Creative Writing Department, Jasper County Historical Society and RSVP.

Those left to honor Marjorie’s memory include her sons, David L. Altemeier and Mark D. (Mary) Altemeier, all of Newton; her three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; her sister, Marilyn Backus of Newton; her brother, Bill Bergman of Newton; her nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dale on Dec. 18, 1988; her grandson William (Bill) Altemeier in 2009; her sister Madge Blackwood; and a brother, Jack Bergman.
