Elks partner with YMCA for summer leagues

With summer half over and the start of a new school year in sight, many local youth received the opportunity to participate in soccer and basketball leagues run by the Newton YMCA and sponsored by Newton Elks Lodge No.1270.

“This was our first year to offer summer leagues in addition to all our sport camps,” said Frank Buckley of the YMCA.

“We’ve always felt there was a need for summer leagues, because the baseball season starts so early and the football camps begin closer to the start of school.”

Thanks to the support given by the Newton Elks Lodge  both soccer and basketball summer leagues had six weeks of play.  Both programs proved successful in the first year and plans are being made for the leagues to continue in 2014.

“The Newton Y wishes to thank all the great members of Newton Elks Lodge No. 1270 for all they do not only for the Y, but our community,” Buckley said.

For youth wanting to continue with sports during the fall, youth flag football and youth soccer registrations are now being accepted at the Newton YMCA, 1701 S. Eighth Ave. E. For more information about leagues contact Scott Taylor, YMCA Sports Director, at (641) 792-4006.
