Emerald ash borer discovered in NW Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois officials have discovered the destructive emerald ash borer in Whiteside County.

The find announced Monday is in northwestern Illinois. The bug is responsible for killing millions of North American ash trees.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture confirmed a beetle found on the county fairgrounds in Morrison is an emerald ash border.

A Department of Natural Resources forestry technician discovered a distressed ash tree. A dead adult beetle was found in its bark.

Officials set up monitoring traps in Whiteside and neighboring counties, but the infestation appears not to have spread.

The ash borer is native to Asia and wasn’t found in North America until 2002. Forty-one Illinois counties are currently quarantined to prevent the spread of the beetle.
