RAGBRAI will limit Des Moines auto traffic

DES MOINES (AP) — Des Moines will welcome thousands of bicyclists into the city as part of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI.

While the annual event is in Des Moines, auto traffic will be limited on some streets for two days beginning Monday and the Court Avenue and Walnut Street bridges will be closed downtown.

Riders will begin entering Des Moines on Tuesday and will pedal out of town Wednesday morning.

Many participants will camp at Water Works Park.

RAGBRAI is a weeklong bicycle ride through Iowa sponsored by The Des Moines Register. The ride started in 1973, and organizers called it the oldest, largest and longest recreational bicycle tour in the world. About 10,000 are registered for this year’s ride.
