Prep baseball playoffs set to start Saturday

Iowa High School Activities Association’s baseball playoffs begin this weekend. Teams in Class 1A and 2A open district play Saturday while Class 3A teams begin district play on Thursday, July 19.

Newton Senior High’s Cardinals open Iowa Class 4A substate baseball playoffs on Friday, July 19. In Class 4A, each substate has three winners, which advance to the Class 4A substate finals baseball tournament on July 24.

The Cardinals are in Class 4A, Substate 8. Newton plays 4A’s seventh-ranked Dowling Catholic of West Des Moines at 7 p.m. Friday. The game is at Dowling Catholic.

Also in 4A, Substate 8 are fourth-ranked Johnston hosting Des Moines Roosevelt and Indianola at Southeast Polk on Friday, July 19.

IN CLASS 2A district play, Colfax-Mingo High’s Tigerhawks and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter High’s Raiders open action Saturday.

The Tigerhawks and Prairie City-Monroe High Mustangs are in the Class 2A, District 12 tournament hosted by Albia. Colfax-Mingo takes on Pella Christian at 5 p.m. Saturday at Albia. Albia plays Davis County, Bloomfield at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Colfax-Mingo-Pella Christian game will play Eddyville-Blakesburg- Fremont at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Albia. That is followed by the PCM Mustangs playing the winner of Albia-Davis County contest.

Semifinal winners play the district tournament championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20. District champions advance to the 2A substate finals tournament July 23.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter is in Class 2A, District 13 regional play hosted by North Polk High in Alleman. CMB plays East Marshall of LeGrand at 5 p.m. Saturday to open the tournament followed by Des Monies Christian taking on Iowa Christian Academy.

The winners of Saturday’s games move into the semifinals on Tuesday, July 16. North Polk, ranked second in Class 2A, awaits the winner of Des Moines Christian and Iowa Christian while West Marshall of State Center will play the winner of CMB and East Marshall.

The Class 2A, District 13 championship game is at 7 p.m. in Alleman on Saturday, July 20. District champions advance to the 2A substate finals tournament July 23.

LYNNVILLE-SULLY in Class 1A, District 9 and plays North Mahaska of New Sharon at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Montezuma. Montezuma takes on English Valleys of North English at 7 p.m. The winners move into a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Montezuma.

On the other side of the bracket, Tri-County of Thornburg plays at Keota this Saturday at Keota. The winner takes on Cardinal of Eldon at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, in Keota. Pekin plays Sigourney in the 5 p.m. game Tuesday in Keota. Tuesday’s winners play in a semifinal contest at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Keota.

The 1A, District 9 tournament championship game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20 in Montezuma. District champions advance the Class 1A substate finals tournament July 23.

Iowa’s Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A state championship baseball tournaments are July 26- Aug. 3 at Principal Park in Des Moines.
