At Monday night’s Newton City Council meeting, the council again will discuss placing new stop signs at an intersection and hear a report on the City Action Plan.
The stops signs, which were initially discussed at a July 1 council meeting, will be placed at the intersection of West Third Street North and North Second Avenue West. There currently aren’t any stops signs for northbound and southbound traffic. These stop signs would make the intersection a four-way stop.
Traffic counts at the intersection revealed that North Second Avenue West has 5,324 vehicles pass per day, while West Third Street North has 3,775 vehicles pass per day. The traffic safety committee recommends adding the stop signs and believes they will make the intersection safer.
On April 1, the council adopted the City Action Plan and will hear a report from City Administrator Bob Knabel at Monday’s meeting. The report will update the council on projects that are in the City Action Plan. Only a few of the projects are underway and the report on Monday night is to introduce city staff to the reporting system.
The City Action Plan includes six goals. Starting Aug. 19, city staff members will discuss one goal in-depth with the city council. These discussions will take place at the council’s monthly study-session meeting, and each goal will be discussed twice per year.
The city council also will discuss and vote on the following issues:
• Approval of a Class E Liquor License for carryout beer, carryout wine and Sunday sales at Walmart.
• A presentation from the Newton Public Library Director Sue Padilla on how the library is working with Iowa Works and what programs the library will have moving forward.
