awsuit dismissed over UNI school closure

CEDAR FALLS (AP) — An appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Iowa Board of Regents’ decision to close the education training school at the University of Northern Iowa.

The Iowa Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that an appeal filed by supporters of the Price Laboratory School was filed after a 30-day deadline, and therefore untimely.

The regents closed the school last year in a cost-saving move, drawing protests from members of the community who considered Price Lab a model teaching and learning center.

The lawsuit alleged the regents didn’t have the authority to close the school because a 2009 law required it to be operated as Iowa’s research and development school.

A judge rejected that argument, finding it was closed “before a functioning research and development school could statutorily come into existence.”
