Newton, area softball teams open regional action this week

South Tama County High is at Union High in LaPorte City and Gilbert goes to East Marshall in LeGrand in the first round of 3A regional play. Both games are at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winners play at 7 p.m. Friday at LeGrand.

The Class 3A Region 7 championship game is at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, in State Center.

In Class 2A, Colfax-Mingo High’s Tigerhawks and the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter High Raiders are in Region 6 while Pella Christian High’s Eagles are in Region 5.

The Tigerhawks play South Hamilton at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Colfax and the winner plays North Tama in Traer at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Also on that side of the bracket, Hudson is at South Hardin in Eldora at 7 p.m. Tuesday and the winner goes to Jesup to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The semifinal game is at 7 p.m. Friday in Jesup.

CMB’s Raiders are on the road in the opening round in Region 6. They play at Madrid at 7 p.m. Tuesday and the winner goes to Conrad playing BCLUW High at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Gladbrook-Reinbeck plays at West Marshal at 7 p.m. in State Center and the winner plays at Alburnett at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The semifinal is at 7 p.m. in Conrad.

The Region 6 championship game is at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, at Waterloo West High in Waterloo.

Pella Christian begins 2A Region 5 play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Mahaska in New Sharon. The winner moves into quarterfinal play against Eddyville-Blakesburg at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Eddyville. The semifinal game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Regina High in Iowa City. The other semifinal is at 7 p.m. Friday in Riverside.

The Region 5 championship game is at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, at Iowa City West High.

Class 1A’s fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully High’s Hawks have a first-round bye in Region 5. The Hawks await the winner of tonight’s Keota-English Valleys game. Lynnville-Sully hosts the winner of tonight’s game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sully.

Also on the Hawks’ side of the regional bracket, Lone Tree plays Tri-County at Thornburg tonight. The winner plays Iowa Mennonite at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Kalona.

The semifinal game is at 7 p.m. Friday in Sully. On the other side of the bracket are 11th-ranked Lisbon and 15th-ranked Sigourney. and that semifinal contest is 7 p.m. Friday in Lisbon.

The 1A Region 5 championship game is 7 p.m. at Williamsburg.

All regional champions advance to the 2013 IGHSAU State Softball Tournaments July 22-26 in Fort Dodge.
