Area Roundup: PCM trounces Colfax-Mingo in rematch

The Prairie City-Monroe Mustangs couldn’t help but have revenge on their minds when the visiting Tigerhawks of Colfax-Mingo stepped onto their field on Wednesday, and they certainly got it.

In the teams’ first matchup of the season, the Tigerhawks staged a dramatic comeback in the seventh inning and won with a walkoff in the eighth, but there would be no such fireworks when the Tigerhawks headed to Monroe. PCM won, 10-3.

Alex DeWitte started and finished the game on the hill for the Mustangs. He gave up just one earned run and struck out a remarkable 13 C-M batters in seven innings.

Given that the Tigerhawks’ lineup is stacked with seniors, DeWitte’s accomplishment seems to carry much more weight.

Senior catcher Nathan VandeWall led the Mustangs with two hits and three RBI. He also doubled and scored two runs.

Clay Cooper had two hits as well, with a double and two runs scored. Cooper stole two bases. Senior shortstop Ethan Kain went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

DeWittle went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Finally, Ron Marshall had a hit in three at-bats, scoring two runs in the process.

For the Tigerhawks, this marks their seventh loss in the last nine games. Caleb Anderson took the loss in this game, pitching six innings and giving up 10 runs on 11 hits.

Connor Hainer went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Austin Yoakum was 0-for-2 with a run scored. Anderson was 0-for-3 with a run scored.

PCM softball walks off against Colfax-Mingo

The Prairie City-Monroe softball team had its rematch with the rival Tigerhawks from Colfax-Mingo on Wednesday, and the Mustangs walked off with a 3-1 victory.

The Tigerhawks scored in the top of the first. Alivia Haley reached base via an error. Amy Russell then singled to put two runners on. Jade Lewis’ base hit up the middle scored Haley to put C-M up by a run.

The Mustangs would crawl back into the game, and a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh ended things in Monroe with the Mustangs celebrating at home plate.

“Our defense and pitching were very strong tonight,” C-M coach Bryan Poulter said. “We battled out of several tough situations with good pitching and defense. Our offense is a different story. We only had two hits, and they were both in the first inning. We had some chances to put pressure on their defense and didn’t preform. Again we had an opportunity to beat a good team but came up a bit short. We have to execute the basic fundamentals to get these wins.”

Hawks blowout English Valleys in five innings

Although the softball team from Lynnville-Sully may have had its 16-game winning streak snapped on Friday against Ballard, the Hawks have now offically started streaking yet again with their 13-0 win over English Valleys.

Sophomore Madison Rasmusson recorded the victory in the circle for the Hawks. She pitched the first four innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four. She was relieved by Emma Schnell, who closed out the Bears in the fifth inning.

Brenna Lanser, Becca Vos and Lasandra James each had a double and two RBI. One of James’ two hits was a home run. Lanser also stole a base and walked while scoring two runs. Kristal Beyere walked, stole two bases and scored two runs in one at-bat. Shelby Davis went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Shaylin Lukehart went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
