Kelley: Food bank lands $1 million state match

DES MOINES — A million dollar state match to the Food Bank of Iowa was signed into law Thursday to help feed the hungry all across Iowa. For more than two years, State Rep. Dan Kelley has been working with state and local leaders to provide adequate resources to the Food Bank of Iowa.

“Iowa is the breadbasket of the world, yet many Iowans go to bed hungry at night," Kelley said. "According to the Food Bank of Iowa, one in eight Iowans are without means to find a meal, while even worse one in five Iowa children go without enough to eat. This public, private partnership between the Food Bank of Iowa and the State is the best way to move these efforts forward."

Included in the Health and Human Services budget bill lawmakers sent the governor is a $1 million appropriation for Iowa’s food banks. This will be a matching appropriation, which means the food banks would have to raise $1 million privately in order to receive the state funds.
