Clarence ‘Bud’ Vander Werf

Clarence “Bud” Vander Werf, 91, of Monroe died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe Fire and Rescue and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The son of Dick and Cecelia (Van Zante) Vander Werf, Bud was born on Jan. 11, 1922, in Monroe. He proudly served in World War II in the United States Army, earning two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart medal. On Dec. 8, 1946, Bud was united in marriage to Alice Verla Fenoglio in Knoxville.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Richard (Kay) Vander Werf of Monroe and Jerrilyn Allison of The Colony, Texas; three grandchildren, Matthew (Erin) Vander Werf of Monroe, Morgan (Tony)  DeRaad of Prairie City and Justin Vander Werf of The Colony, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Baylee Smith, Natalie Smith, Kaia Vander Werf, Jordan Vander Werf, Gavin DeRaad, Brevin DeRaad, and Avery DeRaad; and a sister, Arlyn (Larry “Sam”) Houston of Newton. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife in 1991, and a brother, Harold.
