Joshua T. White, MD, MBA, FAAEM, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for Early Achievement from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

White is a former Decorah resident and graduate of Decorah High School. He graduated from Luther College with a bachelor of science degree in 1997, from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 2001 and from the University of St. Thomas with a master of business administration degree in 2012. He is the son of Ann and Dick White of Decorah and the grandson of the late Dale Onnen, MD, and Ellen Onnen of Newton and the late William and Earlene White of Newton.

White will be sharing the award with a friend and classmate, Chris Buresh, MD, MPH, FACEP. Together they co-founded and manage the Community Health Initiative, an organization engaged in medical care, public health, micro-finance and agricultural management in rural Haiti. White and Buresh travel to Haiti numerous times annually, bringing volunteers, engaging in research and overseeing projects. The CHI was founded in January 2012 after they had been working for and with other organizations in Haiti for nearly a decade.

White lives with his wife, Kim, and two children, Corinne, 5, and Broder, 2, in Vermont, where he splits his time between Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, Vt., where he is employed as an emergency physician and director of emergency medical services, and Dartmouth Hitchock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he is employed as the director of international emergency medicine.
