Avonel Garvin

Avonel Garvin, 94, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

She was born on May 25, 1919, to Roy and Elva (Lowry) Peterson in Colfax. Avonel grew up in Colfax and graduated with the Newton Class of 1937.

On May 9, 1940, Avonel was united in marriage with Robert Garvin in Lancaster, Mo. Robert and Avonel raised five children, Pamela, Patti, Jon Roy (Butch), Kevin and Sheryl. She devoted her life to her husband and her children.

Avonel worked for 25 years for Jasper County Home Health, first as an aide and later in the office.

Avonel enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and was active in Pocahontas, TOPS, O&E, as well as working with children through Campfire, Blue Birds and Cub Scouts. Avonel loved to tell the story of how she rode in a covered wagon in the very first Jasper County Fair. She rode again for the last time in that parade five years ago.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Pamela Robson of Newton, Patti Garvin Ham (Tim) Ft. Collins, Colo., and Kevin Garvin and Sheryl Garvin Sutton of Newton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and two sisters, as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her son, Jon Roy (Butch); and her granddaughter, Michele Christine Robson.

The body has been cremated, and the family is planning a private family burial at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. Zachary Alexander for his wonderful care of their mother.
