Global Wind Day: A homegrown celebration

You may not know it, but June 15th, people around the world are celebrating Global Wind Day. As Iowans, we have lots to celebrate because of the wind industry.

This homegrown industry has meant the creation of good paying jobs here in our state, economic opportunities for rural communities, and has helped Iowa move towards affordable and clean sources of energy. Iowa continues to be a leader in wind energy, ranking third in the nation in wind power capacity and producing nearly one-quarter of its electricity from wind sources.

The wind industry has also helped reinvigorate the manufacturing base, creating wind turbines, towers, and blades — along with jobs — all right here in Iowa. It’s easy to see the economic benefits of wind power in Iowa.

The wind industry has also found a valuable partner in Iowa. I am proud that the Second Congressional district in Iowa, which I proudly represent, is one of very few where all the parts of the windmill are made.

These companies have utilized our top of the line workforce and valuable open spaces. In celebrating Global Wind Day, we celebrate all that this homegrown and sustainable industry has meant to our communities and economy.
