Area Roundup: Tigerhawks softball moves to 8-3

The Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks softball team is beginning to find some rhythm on the diamond. The team continued to beat that rhythmic drum on Tuesday night with a win over Pella, 4-2.

The scoring began for the Tigerhawks in the fourth inning. Sydnie Fahrney led off the inning with a walk. Erin Earles then singled to put two runners on. Rylee Thompson singled to load the bases. Some defensive confusion on the Dutch side turned a passed ball into two runs for the Tigerhawks. A groundout to second base by Jade Lewis drove in the third and final run of the inning.

The Tigerhawks added their final run in the fifth inning. Alivia Haley reached base via error, and Amy Russell’s single put two runners on. Earles then singled to drive in Haley.

Russell got the win for the Tigerhawks, striking out eight Dutch batters on the evening.

“Amy Russel pitched another fine game,” C-M coach Bryan Poulter said. “She made a great defensive play that I haven’t seen during my time coaching.  Our defense continues to improve. We bent a little bit, but we didn’t give up that big inning.”

CMB softball squeaks by Van Meter

The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter softball team took their game with Van Meter on Tuesday night, 3-2, scoring all three of their runs in the opening frame.

Mackenzie Schmitz reached base via error to start the inning. Megan Ritter then hit a bunt single, and Cheyanne Warne doubled to drive in the first run. An error on a ball hit by Abby Applegate scored the final two runs of the inning and the game for the Raiders, and Warne was able to hold that lead for seven innings.

Warne pitched all seven frames, picking up four strikeouts and scattering five hits and three walks while giving up two earned runs.

The Raiders had four hits on the night. They belonged to Warne, Schmitz, Ritter and junior Taylor Ross.

Mustang boys fall to Dutch at home

The Prairie City-Monroe Mustangs got behind early and couldn’t catch up to the Pella Dutch on Tuesday night, losing 9-5 for their second straight loss.

Tyler Foster took the loss for the Mustangs. Foster surrendered hits to half of the 14 batters he faced in his 2.1 innings. He gave up eight earned runs and hit one batter.

Keith Timmons came in for the rest of the game, and did a good job of keeping the Mustangs in the game. Timmons gave up one earned run on two hits and four strikeouts.

Clay Cooper went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Trey Lindsay also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Alek Breckenridge singled in a run in his three at-bats. Ron Marshall had a hit in four at-bats and scored a run. Chase Keuning went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Mustangs are scheduled to take on the Saydel Eagles tonight.

C-M baseball tops BGM

The Colfax-Mingo baseball team improved its record to 8-6 with a home win over BGM on Tuesday night. The Tigerhawks got down 2-1 early, but a fourth inning four-run explosion carried the team to a 6-4 victory.

Jake Alexander picked up the victory for the Tigerhawks. He pitched four innings, striking out two batters and surrendering two earned runs on three hits and a walk. Caleb Anderson pitched the remaining three innings, giving up one earned run and striking out one batter.

It was a surprisingly slow night on the basepaths for the Tigerhawks, who typically steal bases in double digit figures. They swiped only three bags on Tuesday, but it did not come in the way of them getting the win.

Connor Hainer had a double and two RBI in his four at-bats. He also scored a run. Trent Pease went hitless, but picked up and RBI. Alexander walked once, and went 0-for-2, scoring two runs. Chad McLain had two hits in three at-bats, which included a double and a triple. Anderson and Austin Yoakum had the remaining two RBI for the Tigerhawks.
