Rain or shine, Commencement ceremonies will be held for Newton Senior High School’s Class of 2013, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The event will begin with the combined bands, under the direction of Jim Beerends, performing the processional, “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Class of 2013 Vice President Anna Latcham.

NHS Principal Bill Peters will then welcome those in attendance and perform introductions. This year’s commencement speaker will be Kora Scotton, who will speak on “The Power of a Small Group.”

Following Scotton’s speech, the Varsity Chorale will perform “Stars I Shall Find” by David Dickau and “Omnia Sol (Let Your Heart Be Staid)” by Z. Randall Stroope under the direction of Norm Grimm. Then, for one final time, Newton Community School District Superintendent Steve McDermott will introduce Class of 2013 President Tim Stammeyer, who will speak on “Keep Moving Forward.”

Following Stammeyer’s speech, Peters will present the Class of 2013. Class Secretary Krystal Mapes will conduct roll call, and the diplomas will be presented to the graduates. Once diplomas have been presented, Anna Latcham will read a poem.

At the conclusion of the ceremonies, Peters will congratulate the Class of 2013. The combined bands will then perform the recessional “Fanfare and Recessional.”
