Newton Police Department

• Jessica L. Burckel, 25, of Newton was charged with domestic abuse assault, a serious misdemeanor, after authorities responded to a physical fight at 10:04 a.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of North Fifth Avenue East. According to court records, Burckel assaulted the victim after the victim came to her front door. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Daniel J. Jensen, 50, of Newton was charged with third-degree burglary after authorities responded to a burglary in progress at 3:51 p.m. May 9 at in the 200 block of East 12th Street North. According to court records, Jensen approached the victim’s glass storm door and threatened the victim, acting as if he had a weapon. He allegedly grabbed the victim and tried to stop her from shutting the door. He also was charged with driving while license suspended and was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Brett A. Maple, 47, of Newton was charged with disorderly conduct after authorities responded to a loud noise complaint at 12:17 a.m. Saturday in the 312 W. Ninth St. S. Maple told authorities he was working on a vehicle. He was charged and released to appear in court.

• Danny G. Petro, 31, of Newton was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and fourth-degree criminal mischief after authorities responded to a criminal mischief report at 11:52 a.m. Sunday at Emerson Hough. According to court records, the victim went to Petro’s home, and he allegedly hit the mirror on her vehicle, causing $200 to $500 damage. During his arrest, Petro allegedly had 1.4 grams of marijuana and baggies in his possession. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Rodney D. Dobbs, 48, of Newton was charged with probation violation at 4:05 p.m. May 10 at the Jasper County Jail, where he was being held after being arrested May 8.

• Cyril J. Hawkins, 41, of Newton was arrested at 10:45 a.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to appear in court for judgement debtor exam. Hawkins was transported from the Polk County Jail to the Jasper County Jail. 

• Jimmy R. James, 27, of Newton was charged with interference with official acts and knowingly obstructing a peace officer at 10:07 p.m. Friday at 5171 Highway F74 S. Officers were called to the residence in reference to an intoxicated male, identified as James, who would not leave the residence. Officers advised James they would transport him to a friend’s house in Newton, and he began yelling at the officers, stating he would not leave unless he was going to jail. James was arrested and taken to jail. 

• Joshua S. Nelson, 27, of Marshalltown was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Monday on warrant for probation violation and failure to register as a sex offender. Nelson was transported from the Marshall County Jail to the Jasper County Jail.

• Anthony M. Sergio, 22, of Reasnor was charged with public intoxication and calling 911 for a non-emergency after officers responded to a 911 call in Reasnor at 10:22 p.m. Sunday. Sergio allegedly called 911 for help locating his girlfriend, who he believed was cheating on him. Officers located Sergio walking along North and Main streets in Reasnor with an unsealed bottle of Captain Morgan rum in his possession. Sergio admitted to being intoxicated and was taken to jail. 

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
