Don't miss Fred Maytag Park

To the editor:

Let’s not forget another good place for Newton and Jasper County residents to spend some summer vacation time is historic Fred Maytag Park. Please notice the new sign on the left Park entry pillar, informing you the entire park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

The park offers a children’s playground, swimming pool with slides, small children’s area, diving and swim area, sunning area, and snack service area, with a June 4 opening date. The park also features a 12-target disc golf course, tennis courts, basketball area, softball fields, roofed shelters with a fireplace and a very special Fred Maytag Bowl, which provides a great setting for some summer concerts and events.

If you like to seek relics of by-gone days, there is a genuine log cabin available for picnic gatherings.

And off in the southeast section of the park, hidden in shrubs are two truly old, large, stone outdoor bathrooms (seal shut, of course), relics of the olden days when the area served as the County Fairgrounds and discontinued when Maytag Park construction began in 1935.

If you want to get in some biking, Fred Maytag Park can be your starting point and connect you with some other scenic areas.

Don’t miss Fred Maytag Park!
