PCM boys golf wins regular-season finale

Getting in one final round before district play on Thursday, the Class 2A No. 1 Prairie City-Monroe boys golf team squeezed one more victory into its busy schedule.

Shooting a 329, the top-ranked Mustangs (86-2) placed first in a 17-team field at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella. It was the second time in four days the Mustangs competed there, but the experience showed as they topped second-place Pella by 10 strokes.

“This was a huge win for us. This field was stacked with some very good 3A teams,” PCM coach Mike Smith said. “I’m so proud of the way the boys handled themselves. We have played a lot of golf over the last four days. The kids just kept playing one hole at a time and finished on top. It was an awesome day.”

Senior and No. 1-ranked individual Hunter Van Veen once again earned medalist honors with a 77 despite losing a ball on the ninth hole. Finishing behind him was fellow senior Michael Neff with an 83, junior Devon Woody with an 84 and junior Ryan Jennings with an 85. Contributing non-scoring rounds were Justin Beener with an 88 and Wade Hill with an 89.

The Mustangs will try to punch their ticket to state on Thursday in their district meet at Lake Panorma National Golf Course in Panora.
