PCM boys golf wins, advances to districts

The Prairie City-Monroe boys golf team tooka big step toward returning to the state tournament on Friday, shooting a 337 at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella to top an eight-team field and advance to sectionals on Thursday.

Junior Devon Woody topped senior Hunter Van Veen in a playoff after each shot an 82 to bring home medalist honors for the Class 2A No.1 Mustangs. Des Moines Christian’s Ryan Minor also shot an 82, but finished third in the playoff.

Junior Justin Beener fought through some early bogeys to finish third overall with an 84 and senior Michael Neff rounded out PCM’s scoring with an 89. Wade Hill and Ryan Jennings contributed non-scoring rounds of 93 and 95, respectively.

“That was the hardest course set up we have ever played,” PCM coach Mike Smith said. “It was a day where only the strong were going to survive, and I’m so proud of the boys for fighting through it. The course was pretty soft and if you didn’t hit the fairway, the rough really made you pay.”

Des Moines Christian was the other team to advance from the sectional. Jasper County schools Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter finished fourth and seventh, respectively, with scores of 366 and 489.

The Mustangs will head back to Pella for an invitational hosted by Pella Christian today, but will try to punch their ticket to state on Thursday’s district meet at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora.
