Single vehicle accident near Newton Senior High School

A single vehicle accident took place in front of the Newton Senior High School entryway today before noon along S. Eighth Ave W. Lt. Wes Breckenridge of the Newton Police Department said that the driver hit a fire hydrant, slid and then hit an embankment. NPD is still investigating and talking to witnesses. One local resident stated that he didn't see it, but heard it from inside his home; he also stated that it sounded like an explosion. Newton Public Works officials got the water to the fire hydrant turned off immediately.
