New Golf Rankings Released
Newton girls, PCM boys fill lists
With the boys and girls state golf meets approaching at the end of the month, a few area teams have positioned themselves for success with spots in the latest golf rankings from the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.
The Prairie City-Monroe boys golf team retained its top spot in Class 2A, while the Newton girls climbed to No. 9 in Class 4A in the IAHSGCA rankings released last Wednesday.
Leading the way for the Cardinal girls (12-6) is junior Madison Wellik, who is ranked No. 45 overall as an individual with an adjusted score of 52.13. Coming in at Nos. 54 and 55, respectively, are sophomore Shelby Cochran and freshman Jessica Reynolds. Cochran earned her ranking with an adjusted score of 53.63, while Reynolds is averaging 53.88 in her first varsity season.
Senior Bailey Kellogg and junior Madigan Hillyard also made it onto the list, coming in at Nos. 61 and 64, respectively. Kellogg has a current adjusted score of 54.63, while Hillyard stands with a 54.88. As a team, the Cardinals have an adjusted score of 209.63.
Despite taking a few losses last week, the Mustang boys still reign supreme in Class 2A with an overall record of 56-2 and a low team score of 159.49, just barely ahead of Columbus Catholic of Waterloo. Senior Hunter Van Veen also remained on top of the individual list with an adjusted score of 38.10. That score is also the lowest in the state, just ahead of Creston-Orient/Macksburg’s Carson Whittingham at 38.26.
Also making the list for PCM were junior Devon Woody at No. 10, junior Justin Beener at No. 17, junior Ryan Jennings at No. 34 and senior Michael Neff at No. 43.
The Cardinal girls will travel to Marshalltown on Tuesday, while the Mustang boys will also be in action on Tuesday at North Mahaska.
