Superintendent getting large pay increase teachers would have to work decades to match

To the editor:

Congratulations to the new superintendent hired by our elected school board members. He received a 75-percent increase in salary over what he was being paid in Texas.

His Texas salary was $93,000, and his Newton salary — not including the cost of benefits — will be $160,000.

But don’t worry, you hardworking teachers of our young people and all the other hardworking employees of the Newton Community School District. At your estimated current rate of annual increases, you will only have to work another almost 30 years to obtain this same type of increase in salary or annual payroll.

I hope the employees of the school district and property tax payers in the Newton community remember this when it comes time to elect new members to the Newton Community School Board that hopefully will be more prudent with our tax dollars.
