Area roundup: PCM boys golf takes second at quad

On the heels of a second-place showing at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet on Monday, the Prairie City-Monroe boys golf team picked up another second-place finish in a quadrangular at Jester Park on Tuesday.

The Class 2A No. 1 Mustangs shot a 159, finishing five strokes behind first-place South Hamilton, which won the HOI meet. Devon Woody and Ryan Jennings each shot a 38 to lead the Mustangs, while Justin Beener carded a 41. Hunter Van Veen and Reid Jenkins rounded out the scoring with 42s each.

“I thought Ryan and Devon both played very well today,” PCM coach Mike Smth said. “We have never played at Jester Park so it was a great test for us. Reid Jenkins also played a very solid round. He is getting better each time out.”

The Mustangs will head into South Hamilton territory on Thursday with a meet at Jewell Golf and Country Club.

Tigerhawk golfers run away with win at home

Coming off a seventh place finish at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet, the Colfax-Mingo boys golf team defeated the Colo-NESCO Royals by more than 40 strokes in its home meet on Tuesday afternoon, winning 157-198.

The Tigerhawks got several solid rounds, including two under 40. Jimmy Abell shot an even par 36 to win medalist honors. He bogeyed his first hole (No. 4), but he played 1-under golf from then on with a birdie on hole nine and pars the remainder of the round. The other Tigerhawk in the 30s was Colton Russell with a 38. Russell’s highlight of the day came on hole four, which he birdied.

Macauley Mosher finished third on the team with a round of 41. Senior Austin Yoakum rounded out the counting scored for the Tigerhawks with a 42. Even without Yoakum’s solid round, the Tigerhawks would have won handily as the other three golfers — Brady DeJoode, Mason Mosher and JV player Collin Laurens — shot below 50. DeJoode recorded a 43. Mason Mosher had a 46. Finally, Laurens recorded a 49.

There was only one girl competing for the Tigerhawks, but that didn’t mean Olivia Maggard would go home empy-handed. She medaled in the match against the Royals’ team, which shot a 272. Maggard recorded a 47.

Hawks take second at Pella

The Lynnville-Sully girls golf team participated in a trianguar against Pella and Pella Christian at Pella Country Club on Monday afternoon. The Hawks battled themselves on the putting green, but they were able to keep thier scores low enough to hold on to second place, shooting a 212. Pella won the event with a 200.

Macy Lanser and Kelsey Beyer shared the team low, as they both shot 49, which was two shots back of co-medalists Taylor Dursky and Camille Henry of Pella. Lanser was able to secure par on holes two and three. Had it not been for back to back eights on holes four and five, Lanser would have played close to bogey-golf. She had bogeys on holes one, seven, eight and nine. Beyer had trouble with holes three through five, but her pars on holes two, six and nine left her with a decently low score anyway.

Third for the Hawks was Haley Hood with a 54. Hood had bogeys on holes four and eight to highlight her round. The highest total for the Hawks came from Tiffany Fraker. Fraker shot a round of 60 that included a par on one and a bogey on eight.

It was a great night for golf and I was happy with the scores because Pella Country Club has lots of trees,” L-S coach Monica Lanser said. “Unfortunately, we struggled with the trees and with our putting tonight.”

Hawks track comes in fourth at BGM

The Lynnville-Sully girls track team traveled to Brooklyn (BGM) to participate in a South Iowa Cedar League conference track meet on Tuesday and come in fourth. That doesn’t mean the Hawks didn’t have several notable finishers, however, as they won three events, placed second in another and had multiple top-fives.

The first winning L-S athlete was Alexa Vander Leest, who won the 3,000-meter event with a time of 12:09.41. Shelby Foster finished fifth in the same event with a time of 14:03.88.

Tara Vos took first place in the 800, timed at 2:33.97, with teammate Cori Rice taking sixth at 2:49.10. Vos also had the third win for the Hawks on the night. She won the 1,500 as well with a time of 5:25.95. Vander Leest took third in that same event at 5:48.19. Kasiah Ehresman placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 29.55. Madison Rsmusson was fifth in the 400, timed at 2:07.93.

Ehresman and Rasmusson also competed on two of the Hawks’ place-winning relay teams. The 4x800 team, which also included Rice and Vos, finished second at 10:40.64. Also, thee 4x200 team consisting of Rice, Ehresman, Rasmusson and Shelby Davis finished second at 1:57.22. The distance medley relay team of Tierney Needham, Davis, Vos and Vander Leest came in sixth with a time of 5:03.53. The final relay team for the Hawks was the 4x400 team. It finished fourth at 4:45.91 and consisted of Rice, Foster, Natalie Nickell and Vander Leest.

The Hawks placed in one field event as well. Davis finished tied for fourth in the high jump with a jump of four feet, eight inches.

“What a tremendous night by the 13 young ladies I have the privilege to coach. Leading up to the meet, I said a great night would be fourth and an average night could be fifth or sixth,” L-S coach Darin Arkema said. “They had a great night. They squeezed every ounce of effort from themselves and fought hard for every single point scored. They should be very proud with that finish. BGM, North Mahaska, and Belle Plaine are clearly a level above everyone else, with large teams and some great talent. For us to be at the top of the next tier shows the quality and talent of individuals I get to coach”
