Sioux City police seek man who shot officer

SIOUX CITY (AP) — Sioux City police searched for a man Monday with a rifle who shot an officer during a traffic stop. Police said the officer was shot just after 3 p.m. during a traffic stop in an alley.

Officer Chad Sheehan said the injured officer, who wasn’t named, was still in his car when the other motorist got out of his car and began firing. The officer was still sitting in his patrol car when the shooting began.

“It just makes me sick to be honest that it was just that random,” said Sheehan said, an officer in Sioux City for 20 years. “It’s just a constant reminder that we live in a dangerous society and we have to be prepared for danger.”

Police Chief Doug Young said the injuries to the officer weren’t life-threatening.

The Sioux City Journal reports local police were being helped by Woodbury County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals officers in searching for the shooter.

Area schools were locked down but the precaution was later cancelled.

Angelica Topete, who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, said her family was keeping an eye out for strangers and would call police if anything seemed amiss.

“It’s terrifying,” said Topete.
