Cardinal track teams finish third at Oskaloosa

The Newton boys and girls track teams traveled to Oskaloosa on Monday afternoon to compete in a Little Hawkeye Conference meet. Both teams had several standout performances, and both teams placed third overall. The boys had 112 points, seven behind second place Norwalk, and the girls tallied up 70.

Here are some of the notable standouts: Senior Derrick Hurt, fresh off his performances at the Drake Relays on Thursday and Friday, win both the shot put (51 feet, 9.75 inches) and the discus (147-11). Senior Dakota Hills finished fourth in the long jump with a jump of 20-3.5. Hills also ran the third leg of the Cardinals’ 4x100-meter relay team, which finished fourth with a time of 45.47. Also on that 4x100 team were senior Andrew Clements, Jarom Williams and sophomore Deonne Harris. Clements and Hills tied for fifth in the 100 with times of 11.99. Harris had another strong showing in the 110-hurdles for the Cards, winning with a time of 15.44. The 4x400 team of Hills, Clements, Williams and Cody Maxwell took the top spot with a time 3:30.23.

On the girls side, Michaela Bleeker finished second in the shot put with a throw of 34-3, while Madison Bagnall finished fourth (31-11.75). Sarah Kalkhoff, fresh off of her sixth place finish at Drake, hit another PR in the discus with a winning throw of 133-9. Freshman Grace Coen, also a Newton place finisher at Drake last week, won the 3,000 (11:27.36), 1,500 (5:07.81) and the 800 (2:23.44). Meanwhile the 4x800 team of Amber Karsten, Hailey Coy, Sydney Jenkins and Alexis Desplanque took the top spot with a time of 10:14.52. Jenkins also finished third in the 400 (1:00.71). Newton also won the distance medley with a team consisting of Karsten, Leela Spencer, Coen and Taylor Fisher.
