Newton boys soccer wins close one at ADM

The Newton boys soccer team slipped a little bit in the rankings after last week’s losses to Johnston and Knoxville, but the Cardinals quickly reasserted themselves on Thursday.

The Class 2A No. 11 Cardinals traveled to No. 7 Adel-DeSoto-Minburn and left with a narrow 1-0 victory to improve their record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Senior Michael Johnson scored the only goal of the game around the 27-minute mark thanks to an assist from fellow senior Austin Shores. Senior goalkeeper James Leonard made six saves in the victory, which was the Cards’ second-straight shutout after defeating Aplington-Parkersburg 8-0 on Tuesday.

“It was a good, hard-fought game between two good teams, and we were just able to grind it out until the end,” Newton coach Tim Heger said. “It was a good test to see where we are as a team.”
