Newton teen dies from injuries sustained after being hit by vehicle

Brendan O’Brien of Newton died Tuesday from injuries sustained after being hit by a vehicle Sunday evening, according to a press release from the Newton Police Department.

Lt. Wes Breckenridge issued a statement shortly after noon Tuesday indicating Mercy Medical Center notified the department at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday that the 14-year-old had died.

Newton police and fire personnel responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian at 9:04 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of East 19th Street North. According to authorities, Daniel Edwards was driving north in the 1100 block of East 19th Street North when he struck O’Brien, who was in the roadway.

O’Brien later was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center, where he died. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling funeral arrangments.

O’Brien was an eighth-grade student at Berg Middle School. The investigation is ongoing.
