14-year-old injured in accident dies

Berg Middle School student Brendan O'Brien died today, according to a news release from the Newton Police Department.

Lt. Wes Breckenridge issued the release at 12:04 p.m. today. He stated Mercy Medical Center notified the department at 11:45 a.m. that the 14-year-old had died.

Newton police and fire personnel were dispatched at 9:04 p.m. Sunday to the 1100 block of East 19th Street North in reference a car and pedestrian accident. Initial information indicates Daniel Edwards was driving north in the 1100 block of East 19th Street North when he struck O’Brien, who was in the roadway. O’Brien was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center.

Family members of Berg Middle School students confirmed O’Brien is an eighth-grade student at Berg. The investigation is ongoing.
