Cardinal girls soccer picks up another 10-0 victory

One would be hard-pressed to find a team with more momentum than the Newton girls soccer team at this point of the season.

With a 10-0 defeat of fellow Jasper County school Prairie City-Monroe on Saturday, the Cardinals (6-0, 2-0 Little Hawkeye Conference) have now scored 10 goals and one player has scored five times in back-to-back games.

Junior Amber Karsten was the five-goal scorer for the Cards on Saturday, notching first-half scores at the 8:29 and 6:08 marks and second-half goals at the 37:48, 35:12 and 31:51 marks.

“It is good to see different players scoring goals,” Newton coach Sackda Viravong said. “This is because players are sharing the ball and moving/placing the ball to get a shot on goal.”

Freshman Victoria Jordan got the scoring started with a goal at the 36:19 mark of the first half, while senior Stevi Eggers scored with 2:11 remaining, thanks to an assist from sophomore Michaela Jacobson, to put Newton up 4-0 at the half.

Jordan then scored once again to start the second half, and Karsten followed with her three goals.

Following goals from Skylar Seals at 22:49 and Kaylie Rhoads at 21:35, the game was called.

The Cardinals are scheduled to host 5-1 Marshalltown at 7:30 p.m. tonight, while the Mustangs will host county rival CMB on Friday.
