Hawk boys track win again at BGM Tuesday

The Lynnville-Sully boys track team put on a show at the Bear Trax Classic at BGM on Tuesday night. This continues a hot streak for the diversified Hawks team. They have impressed both on the track and in the field events this season, and this meet was no exception.

The Hawks finished first for the second year in a row as a team in Class B on a cold night at BGM.

““The guys ran, jumped, and threw really well tonight,” L-S coach Mike Parkinson said. “Our field events stepped up early in the day and scored us a lot of points, which led to the second L-S boys win at BGM’s Class B Bear Trax Classic. This is the Hawks’ second year in a row winning this track meet. It was a cold night and the times weren’t record setting, but we got the job done. Our guys performed really well and we stepped up when we needed to get the win.”

The Hawks had nine first place finishers on the evening, the most impressive of which might have been junior Meliek Meyer. Meyer was already staring at what looks like a state-level 100-meter dash time, but on Tuesday, he cut seconds off of that with a blistering time of 11.48. Meyer’s performance this season had all but secured him a spot in the Drake Relays next week, but this run shows he’s getting even faster and should be representing L-S at state when the season is near its end. Meyer also had a strong performance in the 200, taking first place in that as well by running an impressive 24.22.

Malin Meyer finished fourth in the 100 event for the Hawks with a time of 11.98. The other L-S competitor in the 200 was fifth-place finishing Brandon Dunsbergen. He was timed at 25.42. In the 400, the Hawks lit up the top of the leaderboard. Jacob Walker took first place with a time of 53.95, and Cale Van Wyk finished second at 56.99.

In the 110-meter hurdles, the Hawks took first and second yet again. Darin Hofer won the event for the Hawks with a time of 16.64, and his teammate on the track, Nathan Russell, finished in the second spot at 16.93 seconds. In the other hurdle event, the 400, Brady Van Wyk snuck on to the leaderboard with a time of 1:06.86.

The distance runners made noise as well for the Hawks. In the 1600, the Hawks had another two place-finishers. Ben Trettin finished fourth with a time of 5:34.07. Cole Nickell was the second Hawk, finishing with a time of 5:50.75. In the 3200, Canyon Kuhlmann finished third. He was timed at 12:03.96, and Jake Brand finished in the fifth spot at a time of 12:26.93.

Of the five relay teams for the Hawks, three finished in first place. The first of those teams ran the 4x200 and consisted of Malin Meyer, Payton Haack, Dunsbergen and Bailee Samson. They ran a collective 1:35.99. The 4x400 team of Russell, Haack, Samson and Walker was also among the first place finishers. They were timed at 3:45.82. The Hawks’ 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay team was the final first place relay team. The runners on that team were Russell, Hofer, Brady Van Wyk and Caden Doll.

The Hawks’ 4x800 team finished in fourth place. That team consisted of freshman Connor Cullen, Austin Newell, Noah Zylstra and Trettin. That team was timed at 9:41.78. The final relay team for the Hawks was the distance medley team of Doll, Ross Van Wyk, Cale Van Wyk and Newell. Their collective time was 4:10.75.

The field events were equally impressive for the Hawks. Two of the Hawks’ Van Wyks took first place in the jumps. Cale was first in the long jump at 18 feet, 11 inches. Brady won the high jump at 5-8. Brady also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 39-9.25. Also competing in the long jump was Payton Haack, who jumped 18-2.5. The Hawks other competitor in the shot put was Daniel Zimmerman. He threw a fifth-place worty 37-0.25. Russell won the discus with a throw of 121-3.

They are next scheduled to compete today at Belle Plaine.
