Eggers, Rhoads lead Newton girls to 5-0 record

Newton senior Kaylie Rhoads recorded her second hat trick of the season on Tuesday, but interestingly enough, she didn’t even lead the team in goals for the night.

Fellow senior Stevi Eggers scored an eye-popping five goals in the Cardinals’ 10-0 mercy-rule win at Knoxville, helping the squad improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Two of Rhoads’ goals were sandwiched between Eggers’ in the first half, as Eggers struck first at the 24:48 mark. Rhoads then converted at 11:05 and 6:49 before Eggers gave the Cards a 4-0 halftime lead with her second goal with 3:25 remaining.

Sophomore Macy Leonard then opened up the second half with the first non-Rhoads or Eggers goal at the 27:07 mark, officially opening up the floodgates on the Panthers. Eggers proceeded with her second-half hat trick, scoring goals at the 21:46, 19:43 and 16:45 marks. Her third overall goal was assisted by Rhoads and her fifth was assisted by senior Kristin Samson.

Samson then got into the scoring act herself, notching a goal at the 11:14 mark. Rhoads then put an end to the game with the Cardinals’ 10th goal of the game with 2:01 remaining.

After facing zero shots on goal for the second time this season, Newton keeper Emily Forsyth was selected to take a penalty kick with about 9:30 left in the game. However, much like in the team’s victory over Pella Christian, she just missed a goal by sending the ball over the crossbar.

“Overall, this was a good performance, especially in terms of our passing game,” Newton coach Sackda Viravong said. “We moved the soccer ball all over the field and everyone got a chance to touch the ball either one or two times. This was a B-plus-plus performance against an average team.”

The Cardinals will now have to wait until next Monday for their next game, as their three scheduled games in a tournament at Nevada have already been canceled due to poor field conditions. Next Monday’s opponent will be Marshalltown and the game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 at H.A. Lynn Field.
