Kalkhoff breaks school record in Ames
The Newton girls track team traveled to Ames on Tuesday to compete in the 2013 Jim Duea Classic. Despite finishing sixth out of the eight teams competing, several of the girls were able to prove their worth against some of the best competitors in the state.
Grace Coen was the most notable of the finishers on the track for the Cardinals. Her freshman season continues to impress. She finished third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:45.10. Coen also took third place in the 800, finishing less than three seconds behind the first-place finisher with a time of 2:20.13.
Additionally, Coen anchored the Cardinals’ fourth-place 800 sprint medley team that finished .04 seconds behind third-place West Des Moines Valley. Also on that relay team were Kacy Cazett, Taylor Graff and Leela Spencer.
