The Mustangs turned out 11 top-six performances throughout the night, including multiple season-bests with athletes recovering from injuries.
Sophomore Rachel Peter topped PCM’s big night with a victory in the 1,500-meter run, as well as fourth in the 800 with a time of two minutes, 32.78 seconds.
Junior Abbi Gilson finished second in the discus with a distance 114 feet, 9.5 inches, as well as fourth in the shot put with a throw of 32-08.
The 4x100 team of Mackenzie Clarke, Kelsey Townsend, Emily Hugen and Lexi Kain took another hopeful step toward the Drake Relays with a second-place showing, while the 4x400 team of Clarke, Townsend, Courtney Van Howeling and Ashley Van Gorp took third with a time of 4:25.67.
Other top individual finishes for PCM included Van Houweling taking third in both the 800 (2:36.33) and the long jump (13-11) and Clarke taking third in the 100 (13.67).
Hugen also finished fifth in the 400 with a time of 67.60 and Townsend placed sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.38.
“We are very excited with our performances tonight,” PCM coach Bridget Burns said. “We decided to add this meet last minute, and we are very glad we did.”
PCM girls golf wins Bondurant Invite, CMB sixth
Although the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf doesn’t enjoy playing in cold weather, its scores certainly say otherwise.
The Mustangs shot a 192 to top a six-team field at Terrace Hills Golf Course in a meet hosted by Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday. Fellow county school Collins-Maxwell-Baxter took sixth with a 277.
Maddie Peters took medalist honors for the Mustangs with a season-best score of 42. Rachel Phifer was next for PCM with a 49, Cassidy Van Veen was right behind with a 50 and Hannah Hugen, and Taylor Phifer carded 51s. Kelsey Van Veen rounded out the team with a 52. PCM topped second-place Pella Christian by 14 strokes.
“Once again, the weather did not cooperate and it was very cold,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “The girls played well, and I am very pleased with their scores.”
For the Raider girls, Anna Peters carded the top round with a 62. Behind her were Kaylan Brant with a 68, Morgan Iske with a 72, Elisabeth Engel with a 75 and Courtney Clapper with a 77.
The Mustangs will be right back in action today, participating in an 18-hole invitational hosted by West Marshall.
C-M boys track wins three events at Norwalk meet
Despite competing in just three events on Monday, Colfax-Mingo seniors Connor Hainer and Jaden Van Dyke brought home three first-place finishes against competition from Class 3A and 4A schools.
Hainer won the long jump with a distance of 21-7 and the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.10 seconds, while Van Dyke was victorious in the 800 with a time of 2:01.29.
Fellow senior Chad McLain recorded personal bests in both the discus and the shot put, taking third in the shot put with a throw of 46-5.5 and fifth in the discus with a distance of 126-05.
The 4x100 team of Michael Brown, Jared Myers, Byron Johnson and McLain rounded out the Tigerhawks’ results with a time of 49.49 for sixth place.
CMB girls lose rough one to Ballard
The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter Raiders hosted Ballard in a girls varsity soccer match on Monday night, losing 6-1. It was a rough night for the Raiders, who fell behind early and couldn’t keep Ballard out of the net.
The lone goal scorer for the Raiders was Katie Ziesman, who punched one in at the 16:23 mark.
“I thought we played fair with the youth of our team, we made some mistakes but hopefully we can learn from them and become a better team,” coach Gary Cummings said. I do like the attitude of not quitting.”
