Around 1:30 a.m. March 4, Officers Randy Oldfield, Jon Schuler and Andy Hansen saved the Kirby family by awaking them and telling them that a fire had broken out in their house, located at North Fourth Avenue West and West 10th Street North in Newton.

The family was able to escape before the roof collapsed onto the upstairs of the building, where most of the family slept, and the Newton Police Department recently recognized the officers for their bravery.

Newton Police Chief Jeff Hoebelheinrich personally presented them with Department Commendations for their heroic actions, with the Kirby family in attendance.
