Newton Park Board receives large donation for fireworks display

Earlier in the year, the Newton Park Board started collecting funds for the Newton Fourth of July fireworks show. Little did the board know that one generous donation would put them above its mark of $7,000.

The board planned on purchasing the fireworks early to maximize an early-purchase discount, and with the donation, that purchase will be possible.

Newton Park Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth said there was a large donation made by an individual, but he declined to go into detail at this time.

The donation means the board may possibly expand the display. Members previously had talked about expanding the project, and it now raises the question of what to do from this point forward. The donation may mean any additional funding can be used to expand the event by possibly providing live entertainment as well as other activities.

With the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce holding a parade earlier in the day, the city may be in for the best Fourth of July yet.
