Police Department participates in multi-agency enforcement

The Newton Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and Jasper County Sheriff’s Department participated in a traffic safety enforcement project March 16 on Interstate 80 in Jasper County.

A saturation patrol was conducted between the 164 and 169 mile markers on Interstate 80, using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).

During the project, law enforcement officers from the Newton Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, conducted traffic stops on motorists for violations of the Iowa Traffic Code.

Officers issued approximately 120 citations and warnings for these traffic violations. These violations included excessive speed, stop sign violation, no proof of insurance, registration violation, and window tint and equipment violations. Officers also made a driving with a suspended license arrest.

The Newton Police Department would like to remind motorists to buckle up, slow down and obey all traffic laws.

Primary funding for the project was provided by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
