Hilda I. Metz

Hilda I. Metz, 90, of Newton died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. There will be a rosary said at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the church followed by a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorials to Willowbrook Adult Day Care, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Skiff Hospice may be left at the church the day of the service or the Wallace Family Funeral Home.

Hilda, the daughter of Francis and Catherine (Kuhn) Putz, was born on Nov. 15, 1922, in rural Warren County, Iowa. She attended school at the Rosemount Church in rural Warren County, Iowa. Hilda was united in marriage with Donald B. Metz on September 6, 1950 in Rosemount. Following Donald’s deployment, they made their home in Colfax, Iowa and in 1954 they moved to Newton, Iowa. Hilda was a homemaker and spent over 30 years volunteering at the VA Hospital in Knoxville. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Those left to honor Hilda’s memory are her three sons, Steve (Patricia) Putz of Newton, Dennis (Bernice) Metz of Sioux City, and Delbert (Susan) Metz of Newton; daughter, Diana (Ed) Ergenbright of Newton; 8 grandchildren; her 7 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Catherine Schurman of Indianola; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald in 2010; two grandsons, Eric and Rod Ergenbright; granddaughter, Angie Ancer; and 10 brothers and sisters.
